I can’t help but think Apple has also crammed so many new features into the Camera app in recent years that the software needs a cleanup. Photographic Styles is basically a more advanced filters system, and Cinematic mode, at least in its first implementation, feels a little rough around the edges. The new cameras and software generally live up to expectations but could use some polish.

Android devices have had these higher frame rates for years, and Apple’s own iPad Pro popularized the feature almost four and a half years ago. It’s a day-and-night change, and it boggles my mind that it took Apple this long to implement. Moving through home screens, launching apps and scrolling are all incredibly smooth. In my testing, ProMotion was the most noticeable upgrade. The presence of a 20% smaller notch at the top of the display, a slightly brighter screen and the A15 chip all feel like negligible changes at this point-at least based on my early experiences with the phone. I think it’s fair to say that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has only three notable changes versus its predecessor: a ProMotion screen that can reach 120-hertz frame rates, an upgraded camera system and a beefier battery.
But this phone is clearly meant to spur upgrades from pre-5G iPhone models, and it will hold Apple over until more significant iPhone changes arrive over the next few years. The Startersįirst impressions: Compared with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is no major step up.
